SUMMARY:Extrusion-Based Ceramics Printing with Strictly-Continuous Deposit
 ion
DESCRIPTION:Technical Papers Fast-Forward \n\nExtrusion-Based Ceramics Pri
nting with Strictly-Continuous Deposition\n\nHergel, Hinz, Lefebvre, Thoma
szewski\n\nWe propose a method for integrated tool path planning and suppo
rt structure generation tailored to the specific constraints of extrusion-
based ceramics printing. Existing path generation methods for thermoplasti
c materials rely on transfer moves to navigate between different print pat
hs in a given layer. However, when printing with clay, these transfer move
s can lead to severe artifacts and failure.\nAs the core of our approach,
we guarantee a single continuous deposition path per layer and thus elimin
ate the problems caused by transfer moves. \nTo arrive at a tractable form
ulation, we split global path generation into a sequence of per-layer prob
lems that we solve from top to bottom. In each layer, we detect points tha
t require support, connect support points and model paths, and optimize th
e shape of the resulting continuous path with respect to length, smoothnes
s, and distance to the model. For each of these subproblems, we propose de
dicated solutions that take into account the fabrication constraints impos
ed by printable clay. We evaluate our method on a set of examples with mul
tiple disconnected components and challenging support requirements. Compar
isons to existing path generation methods designed for thermoplastic mater
ials show that continuous deposition is indeed vital for successful clay p
rinting.\n\nRegistration Category: Platinum Pass, Full Conference Pass, Fu
